Clariant International Ltd. is developing a masterbatch containing new oxygen absorbers for PET packaging.

The Muttenz, Switzerland, company says Cesa-absorb masterbatch contains an integrated, active oxygen barrier that protects sensitive goods against oxygen-induced degradation. Clariant claims it provides high, long-term barrier performance for PET bottles and film without affecting transparency or recyclability.

Cesa-absorb is based on proprietary and patent-protected Clariant chemistry. The oxygen scavenging units comprise a catalyst and an oxidizable substrate which are uniformly dispersed in the polymer. The additives provide environmental benefits by ensuring oxygen barrier in lightweighting and mono-layer constructions, according to Clariant. It plans to commercially introduce the Ceba-absorb masterbatch in late 2014.
